Review by Dawn Belotti for Steel Notes Magazine Madame Mayhem with “Monster” This lady can rock! Raw, edgy, powerhouse vocals and a first rate video produced by Industrialism Films; this is a well captured representation of this metal Madame. Madame Mayhem transforms herself into the “Monster” we often say we will never become but sometimes do. She definitely has a new fan here. I am looking forward to hearing more. Music Video Director: Industrialism Films Website: www.madamemayhem.com OddsLane with “Take It Slow” This St. Louis band has a serious groove. Shot entirely in a recording studio, the band’s well made video captures their jazzy, blues essence. A smooth bass line adds to the richness of the song. Music Video Director: Doug Bykit Website: www.oddslanemusic.com Cunning Man Trap’s “Red” This band from Cologne, Germany has a hardcore sound and vocal style reminiscent of the days of Helloween and Bonfire, this is a high energy aggressive number. Cunning Man Trap’s version of “What Happens in Fight Club” may not be for the faint of heart but it is certainly for the hard rock fan. Music Video Director: Jorg Tochtenhagen Website: www.cunningmantrap.com New York City’s The Commuters remastered “You’ll Stay Right Here”, a song that was originally found on the band’s debut album, Rescue. This touching video was created after a band’s loved one was stricken with cancer. The Commuters partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma society and agreed to donate all proceeds from iTunes purchases. Although the video tells the tale of two dogs in love, the message of how illness impacts a relationship is not lost. This is an emotional ballad and beautiful video. You make us fellow New Yorker’s proud with this one. Music Video Director: Zeeshan Zadi and John Fink Website: www.thecommuters.com Berlin based, alternative band Under The tongue’s dark “Troubled Mind” video has a twisted version of Alice in Wonderland with vocalist, Mark Eden channeling a creepy mad hatter with a Tom Petty look. The song is a well written esoteric piece. The video is a work of art. This band certainly interests me and having an album mastered by the famous Bob Ludwig doesn’t hurt. Music Video Director: Max Nadolny Website: www.under-the-tongue.com Teen vocalist Kyla Imani is a breath of fresh air among an assortment young singers projecting negative imagery. Her smile is infectious and her vocals sweet. It has been many years since I have heard a teen look forward to sleepovers and listening to records. This young lady is a positive role model and hopefully we will be hearing a lot more from her. 4. Helloween

Occasionally, the gap between personality and thought becomes an abyss. Integrity gets a little thick and crusty. Mask-makers and make-up marketers are well aware of this fact. Helloween is the holiday where the libidinal discharge of this gap takes form. Anohter excerpt from SoundSeeker series: http://glia.ca/conu/soundSeeker/wordpress/

The Spiders touch upon current affairs with their video “Election Day.” This New Jersey band perfectly demonstrates the parody of electoral candidates while emphasizing the need for all to have their voices heard. Their sound would fit perfectly in the 1980’s with the vocalist channeling quite a bit of Vince Neil and the band reminding me of early Motley Crue. That being said, they have an enjoyable hard rock sound and the video is quite entertaining.
